SPEEDS-2026: is an interdisciplinary conference that explores the critical
interconnections between planetary energy systems, hill and mountain ecosystems,
environmental stability, disaster science, and human survival. Hill regions function as the
ecological backbone of the planet—regulating climate, conserving biodiversity,
sustaining water resources, and supporting millions of livelihoods. Yet, these fragile
systems are under growing pressure from climate change, unplanned development,
resource exploitation, and recurring natural hazards.
The conference foregrounds the urgent need for responsible energy use and
environmentally sensitive strategies tailored to the unique vulnerabilities of mountain
terrains. The conference emphasizes sustainable and renewable energy solutions,
ecological conservation, and disaster resilience as mutually reinforcing priorities. It
addresses emerging risks such as landslides, floods, earthquakes, glacial lake outburst
floods, and forest fires, highlighting the role of scientific risk assessment, early-warning
systems, resilient infrastructure, and climate adaptation. Equally important is the human
dimension—community livelihoods, water and food security, health, and cultural
continuity—where participatory governance and community-centric development are
central to long-term resilience.
By integrating modern science with traditional ecological knowledge, SPEEDS-2026
aims to foster cross-disciplinary collaboration among scientists, engineers,
environmentalists, social scientists, and policymakers. The conference seeks to translate
evidence-based research into actionable policies and practices that ensure environmental
sustainability, disaster preparedness, and dignified human well-being in hill and mountain
regions, contributing to a safer and more resilient future for generations to come.
